Something about myself

Hi, I am Desmond or Dez in short. Recent years, cooking at home have become a hobby to me. Whenever mood strucks me and i have enough preparation time, i will do some homecook food to satisfy myself.

I started cooking at the age of 13. No one have ever taught me how to cook. I was somehow indirectly force to pick up this current hobby of mine. When my dad passed away when i was 13, my mom lost mood in doing anything. At that time, i still have 2 younger brothers whom were then 11 and 9. Somehow, we still need to eat and we cant always rely on my relatives or neighbour, so thats how i started my cooking expedition.

I started by throwing in all ingredients and start stir frying them. But after it is done, i actually got to realise that some of the ingredients are not well cooked while some are already overcooked. I have done many trial and error until i finally learn to sequentially adding in the ingredients. Ever since then, my homecook skills improved bit by bit until my mom recovered.

As i am still schooling at that time, i dont really have much time to cook. So, my mom took over. I often comment on her dish until she got fed up and assign the cooking of dinner to me. (Hahaha) As my study hours becomes longer, she eventually took over this task.

Ever since i pick up this skill, i started to wonder how the hawker cook certain dishes especially some of my favourite. At that time, internet wasnt that popularly used and neither is it affordable to me. So, there wasnt much avenue for me to know the recipes to them until 1 fine day, i asked the auntie from my favourite Laksa stall to share with me on the recipe for it. To my surprise, she generously shares her recipe with a teenager like me and that became the first hawker dish that i succeed in cooking. Using that as a foundation, i started to attempt more and more dishes.

I dont always succeed in all my attempts. There are also times where i fail and were to shy to feed my failed product to all my guinea pigs (family members) at home, so i just pour them away.

Though i have been doing it for quite a while, i have never document them down. Its only until recently when i start to have friends asking me on how to cook this and that. Since there are so many steps to remember and they cant really memorized so much via phone conversation, they suggested that I document them down so that they can refer to whenever they wanted.

Not knowing how to do it, i started to embark on sharing via facebook and was hoping that it will aid more people. Not too long after that, a friend of mine offered to do up a website to archive all these documentation so that it can benefit more people whom love homecook style food especially for my friends staying overseas and somehow missed local (Singapore) hawker food. This serve as an avenue to do it themselves.

Hope my sharing here will somehow benefit someone.

Happy Cooking and Bon Appetit!
